CANADA REFUNDABLE MEDICAL EXPENSES SUPPLEMENT
What is it?
This refundable tax credit is available to low income earners who have medical expenses or disability support expenses.
Who is eligible?
To qualify, a person must:
Be a resident of Canada for the entire tax year.
Be 18 or older at the end of the tax year.
For the 2024 tax year, have employment income of $4,275 or more and an adjusted family net income of less than $61,699.
How much is the credit (for 2024)?
The base amount is the lesser of:
$1,464, and
25% of the sum of net medical expenses and disability support expenses.
Net medical expenses are calculated as total expenses minus 3% of net income.
The credit is reduced by 5% of family net income over $32,419.
The credit is fully eliminated once family net income reaches $61,699.
How is the credit applied for?
UFile automatically claims this credit for eligible individuals. No special steps are required. The credit is reported on Line 45200 and the calculation is shown on the Federal Worksheet.
